A a temporary arrangement of material (TAM) is exactly as it sounds. Run a set of shapes through and algorithm and the same through human hands. Place them side by side, and in the space between paint, paper, pixel, and code we find that no iteration is final.Released with Bright Moments.
Process
TAM began in #### when mg was experimenting with the translation of flat digital color to various physical media. what started with printing out black rectangles on a xerox machine led to spray painting hunderred of scrap pieces of paper, the texture created by the underlying paper, the makeup of the paint, the intensity, distance, direciton, layering, movement of the spray ... created textures, unexpected compositions, subtle nuances ...
piece of paper coming off inkjet/laser painter/silkscreen..
spray painting a paper
seeing the colors/papers side by side, in piles.. interest in the sequence, made a series of small books with a friend
but most remained detached, free to be rearranged at a whime... and scanned back into the computer, played with arrangements to activate colors in new ways
returned to these compositions and papers again and again. pleasure in seeing new adjancencies, color stories from simple shapes and color, the speed and casualness of the exercise.
the unending, generative nature of the project. led to-- can we build an algorithm that can produce new outcomes. based on these sketches, putting into words, into code what are up to this point, unconscious rules.. what is possible?
a study of what was done with spray paint, hands, a cutting board, a utility knife. what patterns intuition follows. sketiching both analogue and digitally. back and forth in a team of artist and developers
create digital texture-noise density, direction, fineness; # of shapes, scale, rotation placement, alignments, imperfections/irregularities - wonkiness of shapes, cutout shapes; limit colors, create palettes,
debugging. considering the merit of unintended 'mistakes'
the result: 100 little algos. creating a range of pleasing arrangements important that this is about making, the continuous nature of a creative practice/process. and that we have tools at our disposal that allow us to explore be it analogue or digital. algo born from intuition. given the same shapes and colors, human and computer to play with, curious what different outcomes will be created, and what other -yet- unmade ones are possible. snapshots of a process. that can and will contiue
